What Are Yahoogroups?
Earlier there were EGroups and Onelist both similar in nature. Then these two merged. After the merger, they have been taken over by Yahoo and are now called Yahoogroups.
The aim of  Yahoogroups is  to enable interaction amongst similar interest groups. It is a free service. Their operating costs are met through advertisements attached to the email messages that various Yahoogroups subscribers receive. The ads can be knocked off by a`paid' request to them.
Anyone can form a Yahoogroup on any subject of one's choice by going to http://groups.yahoo.com. In order to start a Yahoogroup or become member of an existing Yahoogroups, one has to be a become a member of the main Yahoo. You will be prompted to pick up a Yahoo ID at the commencement of the application. This is a parallel and transparent procedure undertaken while the subscriber is led through the process of registration for any specific Yahoogroup. A newsletter received  from Yahoogroups during end 1999, stated that more than  280,000 unique Yahoogroups were in existence as of then.

Due to a recent federal law that came into existence, children below the age of 13 are not allowed to become members of any groups.

Rimcollians Yahoogroup
Rimcollians  Yahoogroup  came into existence on 27th Juy 1999. This provides us the fastest media to enable interaction between Rimcollians living in India or abroad. In fact, many long lost friends are re-discovering each other. Now RIMC and ROBA are also actively participating in Rimcollian Egroups completing the whole loop. As at the end of Februrary 2001, we have nearly 200 members on board our Yahoogroup.
No active publicity campaign has been undertaken to promulgate its existence. The news of the existence of Rimcollians Yahoogroup is spreading by word of mouth and goodwill. Let Rimcollians hear of it. If they like it, let them join it and experience it. After that they could decide whether to hang on or `abandon ship'.
Membership is restricted exclusively to Rimcollians (not to current cadets) and some other non-Rimcollians who have contributed their might to the building up of RIMC . In order to become eligible to join Rimcollian Yahoogroups, the applicant should have studied in RIMC and should have successfully completed his tenure there. The `veto' power of `Yes' or `No' rests exclusively with the manager of the Group. Please note that though this Groups liaises with ROBA and RIMC for common good, it does not fall under the purview or control of ROBA or RIMC. It is an independent medium of `keeping in touch'. Would you like to join this elite Group?
What happens within Rimcollian Yahoogroup? Well, it is a forum for tracing out other Rimcollians and keeping in touch with each other, using the speed and flexibility of Internet messaging. Mail posted by any member to rimcollians@yahoogroups.com is instantly circulated to all other members by email and also posted on a common message board. This is the default option. In case regular email feed is inconvenient to someone, then originating a request to the manager can change the default option. The other options available to read Yahoogroups email are 'receive daily digest only’ or 'read it on the web’.
The Rimcollians Yahoogroup has its own web page, which was automatically created along with the formation of Rimcollians Yahoogroup. The web page can be accessed after signing up at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rimcollians
The success of any group depends on the degree of participation by its members.   We all have our own personalities. Some people love listening, other people love talking..and some people just drift off on their own. Some love interacting with people and some hate it. Some love to originate email while others cannot figure out the right end of the keyboard. Well, we have an amalgam of members and through this `khitchdi' we manage to convey ideas/stir action sometimes palatable and sometimes unpalatable. I guess it is all a part of healthy interaction.
While there should be no need to force the pace of messaging, it would be greatly appreciated if the `lurkers’ indulge in active messaging instead of just sitting back and reading email. Topics, which could be discussed, have no limitations as long they don’t offend the sensibilities of others and are devoid of personal animosities. It   needs to be emphasised that the subjects need not be related to RIMC, Rimcollians or ROBA. Are you worried about the proliferation of of liquor shops in your residential locality? Lets talk about it! How about the health of the city your are living in? Lets Talk about it! The depletion of Ozone Layer? We could educate each other!
When things get out of hand, the manager has been provided with the tools to `moderate’ the messages, a step most managers hesitate to take. When `moderation’ is invoked, all messages are sent to the manager for his `acceptance/refusal’ and are posted on the board or relayed to other members only on his acceptance.
We are looking forward to many more Rimcollians joining the Yahoogroups. It is the fastest and most efficient means of communication between Rimcollians, ROBA and RIMC

Guidelines to Accessing Rimcollians Yahoogroups Web Page
A personal web page was automatically created by Yahooroups when we formed Rimcollians Yahoogroup. It is essential that all members learn to access that page and its various fora because a variety of `housekeeping' controls are located there. Please remember that the manager does not have the controls to do many of these things on your behalf. By accessing the web page you can do things like:-
  • Stop clogging your mailbox by opting to read messages at your convenience
  • Access all previously stored messages.
  • View the `List of Members' and their e-mail addresses.
  • View the `Database' which contains more exhaustive details of the members (eg their addresses/phone numbers etc, what they are doing now etc).
  • Access `My Profile' which gives you personal control over how your account is managed.(eg You can vary the number of lines displayed per page, edit your personal particulars, change your email address, Add up to five `alias' e-mail addresses etc).
  • Upload/download interesting files to/from the `Files' section.
Accessing the Page
Get connected to internet. Launch your browser (e.g. Netscape/Internet Explorer/Opera etc).
Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rimcollians
Yahoo insists that all users making use of Yahoo' services must obtain a Yahoo ID. You will be led through the process till you get a t a YahooID for yourself. Once that is accomplished, you can view the web site.
Repeat Visitors:- If you have visited Rimcollian Yahoogroups Home Page earlier, enter your YahooID and password  at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rimcollians and you will be given access to the home page. (If `cookies' are enabled, you may not even need to do this). If you have forgotten your password, read the `Important Instructions' relating to password given on that page. There is a `Click' tag under this important notice, and once you click that and give your email address, a new password/validation number will be generated and sent to your email address.
The next screen will have `My Yahoogroups' or Rimcollian Yahoogroup' highlighted.
Click on that and you reach Rimcollians Yahoogroups web page. Explore by clicking on various tabs like Messages/Members/Database/Files etc.
Privacy
Only members can view the details of the group, post messages or read messages. Any mail from any intruder will either be rejected or sent to the Manager for his perusal and appropriate action.
Your unique identity within the Group
Please remember this very critical  point. Your unique identity within the Group is the e-mail address under which you have registered with the Group. When you originate mail to Rimcollians Yahoogroup, the `From' column of your message header is minutely checked for an absolute match. (Please note that if you are registered as xxx@del3.vsnl.net.in and subsequently you have got a shortened address of the form  xxx@vsnl.com , that may be OK by you. Yahoogroups considers these two addresses as entirely different from each other). If there is even a slight variation, the message is deemed as originating from a non-member and is rejected.
Similarly if you wish to originate mail from more than a single e-mail address, you can add such address/addresses as `alias' address/addresses by editing `My Profile'. You can add up to 5 alias addresses from which you will be permitted to originate e-mail to Yahoogroups. However, outgoing mail will be delivered to your primary registered e-mail address only.
Modifications to your Email Address
Often I get requests from Rimcollians Yahoogroup subscribers informing me of a change in their email address with a further request that I reflect the change in Yahoogroups so that mail flows to the new email address. Any modification to your email address can only be done by the subscriber. The manager has not been provided with any cockpit controls to modify a subscriber's email address. After modifying the address, please inform me so that I could keep my database up-to-date.
You can modify your email address by going to Rimcollians Yahoogroup web page, logging in and editing `My Profile'. Each member must develop the capability to access the web page to undertake these minor housekeeping choresz.
Non-Receipt of Email from Yahoogroups
It may be due to two reasons.
  • Your address has not changed but your mailbox is full to the brim (exceeded the disk quota allocated by your Internet Service Provider). That provokes your email provider to bounce your messages back to the sender. After repeated bounces, Yahoogroups considers you  a nuisance and will   automatically revoke your membership.
  • You email address has changed from the one under which you had registered initially with Rimcollian Yahoogroup,. Yahoogroup has been sending mail to your old email address. It bounces back from there and you are declared a `bouncer' and the membership revoked automatically
Remedy this situation by clearing your mail box regularly or by modifying your email address with Rimcollian Yahoogroup
Posting of Messages
Mail sent to rimcollians@yahoogroups.com will be automatically transmitted to all members of the group instantaneously. That is the default option for the group

If you are clicking the `reply' button in respect of a received message, your reply will be sent only to the originator of the message and not to Rimcollians Yahoogroup.

Message meant for a specific Rimcollian, or a limited number of them, must be sent as private mail to respective addressees and not sent to rimcollians@yahoogroups.com. Otherwise you are likely to cause irritation to many.

Receiving Mail
The default setting is `Receive by e-mail'. There are two other options i.e. `Receive a daily digest' and `Read on Web only'. You can edit `My Profile' to effect these changes or approach the manager of the group.
Logging out from Rimcollians Yahoogroups Web Page
When you are logging in from public terminals like Cyber Parlours or from someone else's computer, do not tick the option `Remember Me' which you can see on the opening page of Rimcollians Yahoogroup web page login area.. This is to prevent `cookies' being stored in that computer which may make it easy, for someone else logging in after you, to access the web page. Please click `logout' when you are leaving the web page. (Read more about cookies from the `Files' section of the home page).

Email Etiquette
  • Keep the content of your messages `wise, gentlemanly and devoid of personal animosities and prejudices' in the spirit of our old School. The manager of the group has the option to `moderate' messages before allowing it to be relayed to other members of the group. This option has not been invoked presently and will not be invoked unless future compulsions arise.

  • Be considerate to the sensitivities and view points of others.

  • Personal accusations, slander etc would be deemed totally taboo and the the member would be `unsubscribed' from Rimcollians Yahoogroup.

  • Maintain a certain quality and decorum in your messaging.

  • Don't post anything which may not be of interest to all Rimcollians.

  • When you compose e-mail, all the email addresses listed in the `To' and `CC (Carbon Copy') column of the address block are mutually visible to all recipients.  This is a breach of privacy and security. Except when absolutely necessary, list `second to last addressees' in the `BCC' (Blind Carbon Copy) column so that the addresses stay mutually hidden. There are software programmes snooping out e-mail addresses from internet to add to their bulk mailing or spam list. So it is critical to prevent e-mail addresses from being unnecessarily publicised.

  • Don't type your message in all-uppercase . In cyberspace use of all-uppercase is tantamount to shouting and rudeness. Neither should you type everything in lowercase. Follow the standard rules of usage of English.  Use correct grammar and spelling. Electronic mail is all about communication. Poorly-worded and mispelt messages are hard to read and potentially confusing. Just because electronic mail is fast does not mean that it should be slipshod, If your words are important enough to write, then they're also important enough to write properly.

  • Almost all mailers present you with the subject line when you browse your mailbox or when you are composing your reply. It is  often the only clue the recipient has about the contents when filing and searching for messages. Always choose and enter the `subject' header appropriately. If you are replying to a message, and the subject matter veers away from the original thread, then modify the subject header to reflect the subject of your new message. All messages are archived on Rimcollian Yahoogroups web page. Facility exists to retrieve the messages by `thread'. This facility is useful only if subscribers are careful about entering the `subject' appropriately.

  • When you click the `Reply' button, please do not quote the full message. Restrict `paraphrasing' to include only the minimum you need from the original message. One of the most annoying things you can encounter in e-mail is to have a chain of previous messages paraphrased and attached to the main message. Use some kind of visual indication to distinguish between text quoted from the original message and your new text. This makes the reply much easier to follow. ">" is a traditional marker for quoted text, but you can use anything provided its purpose is clear and you use it consistently.

  • E-mail is a treacherously double edged weapon. So easy to 'launch off' but impossible to recall. Vitriolic outpourings composed in solitude or in a moment of aberration, and sent off a jiffy are capable of conveying a far more strident and accusatory tone than intended. Messages sent in the heat of the moment  generally only exacerbate the situation and are usually regretted later. It is prudent to think and pause before hitting the `send' button. Avoid public "flames" or messages sent in anger.   Sometimes even innocent   messages could be open to misinterpretation (especially in the absence of emoticons and smileys)

  • Avoid the typical novice syndrome of `forwarding' hackneyed Internet jokes, chain letters, hoaxes, useless jpgs, greeting cards  and such other trivia.

  • Do not send huge file attachments without seeking prior sanction from the recipient. Mail box disk quota is extremely limited and your message may cause the mail box of the recipient to exceed the disk quota . The mail server will refuse to accept further messages and will bounce them back. Thus the  recipient may lose critical  mail because of the frivolous attachment that you have sent.

  • If your mail program supports fancy formatting (bold, italic and so on) in the mail messages it generates, don't be assured that the recipient will see it that way. Most people configure their mail packages to receive pure text mail only (i.e. HTML disabled).

  • Private email exchanged between members of the Group remain `private' between the parties concerned. If any such message needs to posted for public view, under any context, prior concurrence must be obtained from the parties involved. Ideally, after obtaining such a concurrence,  one of the involved parties may publish it. Ordinarily, a  third party would not be deemed to have any locus standi to publish it.  Breach of  these provisions could result in  the subscriber being `unsubscribed' or placed under selective `moderation'  depending on the sole discretion of the manager of the Group.

  • Don't remain a `lurker' content to read all messages but never willing to contribute anything. Your participation and views on areas of your specialisation are welcome. Yahoogroups forum can discuss any subject under the sun. Therefore do not restrict your inputs to only Rimcollian/ROBA affairs.

Smileys and Emoticons

Electronic mail has very nearly the immediacy of a conversation, but is totally devoid of "body language". The Internet "counter-culture" has had an answer to this problem for years - "smiley faces", or groups of ASCII characters that are meant to look like a face turned on its side.

The most common smiley faces are probably these:

  • A smiling face seen side-on; generally used to indicate amusement, or that a comment is intended to be funny or ironic.
  • An unhappy face seen side on; generally used to express disappointment or sorrow.
  • A winking smiley face; usually indicates that something should be taken "with a grain of salt".
  • A mischievous smiley face; usually indicates that a comment is intended to be provocative or racy.

A file of Smileys are Emoticons are available in `Files' section of Rimcollian EGroups Webpage. There are thousands more available on the Web.
